Unit History

The 48th Armored Division, nicknamed the “Dixie Division,” was a unit of the U.S. Army National Guard formed after World War II. Established in 1946, it was primarily composed of National Guard units from Georgia and Florida. The division trained extensively during the Cold War era and served as a key armored force for homeland defense and readiness. It was inactivated in 1968, with its lineage carried on by the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Georgia Army National Guard.
