Unit History

The SSI (Shoulder Sleeve Insignia) for the 48th Armored Division – “Hurricane Division” features the classic triangular design used by U.S. armored divisions, with red, yellow, and blue colors symbolizing the combat arms—Artillery, Armor, and Infantry.

The division was nicknamed the “Hurricane Division,” representing its speed, power, and striking force—like a hurricane sweeping through the battlefield. Activated in 1955 from the 48th Infantry Division, it consisted mainly of Georgia and Florida National Guard units. The division trained extensively during the Cold War to maintain readiness and was inactivated in 1968. Its lineage and traditions live on today through the 48th Infantry Brigade Combat Team of the Georgia Army National Guard.
