Unit History

The 45th Infantry Division, nicknamed the “Thunderbird Division,” was formed in 1923 as part of the Oklahoma Army National Guard. It saw extensive combat in World War II, fighting in Sicily, Italy, France, and Germany, and again served with distinction during the Korean War. Known for its toughness and strong citizen-soldier spirit, the division remained a key part of U.S. defense through the Cold War. It was inactivated in 1968, with its heritage carried on by the 45th Infantry Brigade Combat Team.
