Unit History

The 40th Armored Division, known as the “Sunshine Division,” was a unit of the U.S. Army National Guard formed in 1954 when the 40th Infantry Division was reorganized after the Korean War. Composed mainly of California National Guard units, the division’s SSI (Shoulder Sleeve Insignia) features a gold sun on a blue background, symbolizing its California heritage and nickname.

The 40th Armored Division trained throughout the Cold War, maintaining readiness as part of America’s strategic reserve. It was inactivated in 1968, with its proud traditions and “Sunshine Division” name later carried on by the 40th Infantry Division, which continues to serve today in the California Army National Guard.
