Unit History
The 3rd Cavalry Division was a U.S. Army Regular Army formation created in the early 20th century, following World War I. Headquartered at Fort Sam Houston, Texas, the division was part of the Army’s effort to maintain a mobile, horse-mounted force for reconnaissance and border defense.
Its SSI (Shoulder Sleeve Insignia) represented the heritage, speed, and striking power of traditional cavalry units. The division never saw combat as a full formation and was disbanded in the 1940s as the U.S. Army transitioned from horse cavalry to mechanized and armored units, marking the end of the classic cavalry era.
