The 30th Armored Division, known as the “Volunteers,” was formed in 1954 from the Tennessee Army National Guard. Made up of units from Tennessee, Mississippi, and Alabama, it served during the Cold War as a key armored force for national defense. The division was inactivated in 1973, with its proud Volunteer heritage carried on by the Tennessee National Guard.
