Unit History
The 28th Armored Division was a planned U.S. Army formation during the post–World War II reorganization period, envisioned to expand America’s armored warfare capabilities in the event of a global conflict. It was part of the Army’s “phantom” or unactivated divisions, existing mainly on paper for training, planning, and deception purposes during early Cold War years.
Its shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) was designed to symbolize armored strength and mobility, reflecting the division’s intended role in mechanized combat and defense readiness. Although it was never fully activated or deployed, the 28th Armored Division stands as part of the Army’s strategic expansion era of the mid-20th century.
