Unit History

The 27th Armored Division was a New York National Guard unit organized after World War II to modernize and strengthen the Army’s armored force. Activated in 1955, it evolved from the 27th Infantry Division, reflecting the shift toward mechanized warfare during the Cold War.

Headquartered in Syracuse, New York, the division trained extensively for potential NATO and homeland defense missions but was never deployed in combat. It was inactivated in 1968 as part of a nationwide reorganization of the Army National Guard.

Its shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) features a yellow lightning bolt on a red background, symbolizing speed, power, and armor striking force.
