Unit History
The 27th Armored Division, nicknamed the “Empire Division,” was part of the New York Army National Guard. The “Empire” title comes from New York’s state nickname — the Empire State.
Formed in 1955 from the reorganization of the 27th Infantry Division, the Empire Division was structured for Cold War–era armored warfare and focused on rapid mechanized response within U.S. and NATO defense plans.
Its shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) features a gold lightning bolt on a red background, representing striking power, speed, and armor mobility, while honoring its New York heritage through the “Empire” name. The division was inactivated in 1968 during Army National Guard reductions.
