Unit History
The 15th Cavalry Division was a U.S. Army Regular Army unit organized in 1917 during World War I at Fort Bliss, Texas. It was formed from several existing cavalry regiments to provide a mobile force for potential deployment overseas, though it primarily remained on the U.S.–Mexico border to conduct patrol and security operations.
Its SSI (Shoulder Sleeve Insignia) reflected the mobility, reconnaissance, and fighting spirit of the American cavalry. The division was inactivated in 1919 after the war ended, as the Army reduced its forces. The 15th Cavalry Division marked one of the last major efforts to organize traditional horse-mounted divisions before the rise of mechanized warfare.
