Unit History

The 2nd Battalion, 47th Infantry (Mechanized), part of the 9th Infantry Division, served with distinction during the Vietnam War. As a mechanized infantry unit, it provided rapid mobility and firepower, operating M113 armored personnel carriers to conduct patrols, security missions, and combat operations in the challenging terrain of the Mekong Delta and other regions.

Soldiers of the battalion were engaged in counterinsurgency operations, riverine support, and offensive actions against Viet Cong and North Vietnamese forces. Their actions earned them recognition as Vietnam Combat Infantry Veterans, reflecting the unit’s bravery, resilience, and operational effectiveness in one of the most complex and difficult theaters of the war.
