Unit History
The 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry Regiment, nicknamed the “Jumping Mustangs,” is an airborne cavalry unit with a distinguished record of combat service. During the Vietnam War, the battalion conducted air assault, reconnaissance, and infantry operations, often deploying by helicopter into contested areas to engage enemy forces and secure strategic objectives.
The Distinctive Unit Insignia (DUI) and Airborne Basic qualification signify the unit’s airborne capabilities and elite training. Soldiers of the 1st Battalion, 8th Cavalry earned recognition for their service in Vietnam, reflecting courage, mobility, and operational effectiveness in challenging combat environments.
