Unit History

The U.S. Army Drill Sergeant Program, formally established in 1964, created a select corps of noncommissioned officers entrusted with shaping the Army’s newest Soldiers. Rooted in the traditions of the Infantry Training Centers and early recruit schools, Drill Sergeants became the symbol of discipline, professionalism, and foundational Soldier development. Assigned to Basic Combat Training units across major Army training posts, they conduct instruction in warrior tasks, physical readiness, weapons proficiency, and Army values. Renowned for their leadership, precision, and demanding standards, Drill Sergeants have played a central role in preparing generations of Soldiers for service, forming one of the most enduring and influential institutions in U.S. Army history.
