Unit History

24th Infantry Regiment – Buffalo Soldiers (Camp Furlong & Columbus, New Mexico)
The 24th Infantry Regiment, formed in 1869, was one of the U.S. Army’s historic African American infantry units known as the Buffalo Soldiers. Elements of the regiment served in southern New Mexico, including Camp Furlong and the town of Columbus, conducting border-security missions during the early 20th century. The 24th Infantry helped protect the U.S.–Mexico border, supported operations following the 1916 raid on Columbus, and contributed to regional stability during the period of the Mexican Expedition. Known for professionalism and resilience, the 24th Infantry Regiment remains an important part of Army Infantry Branch history.
