Unit History
The Buffalo Soldiers were African American Soldiers who served in the U.S. Army’s infantry and cavalry regiments following the Civil War, starting in 1866. Notable units included the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments and the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments.
These Soldiers were deployed primarily in the American West, performing duties such as frontier defense, escorting settlers, building infrastructure, and engaging in conflicts with Native American tribes. Over time, Buffalo Soldiers distinguished themselves in later conflicts, including the Spanish-American War, Philippine-American War, World Wars, and beyond, earning a legacy of courage, discipline, and professionalism in both combat and peacetime service.
