Unit History

The Buffalo Soldiers were African American Soldiers serving in the U.S. Army infantry and cavalry regiments beginning in 1866, including the 9th and 10th Cavalry Regiments and the 24th and 25th Infantry Regiments. Their nickname, “Buffalo Soldiers,” symbolized their courage, resilience, and determination.

Guidons bearing the Buffalo Head represent the units’ identity, esprit de corps, and historical legacy. These flags were carried into battle, on patrols, and during ceremonial functions, serving as a symbol of pride and cohesion for Soldiers of the Buffalo Soldier regiments. The guidons honor the regiments’ distinguished service on the frontiers, in domestic operations, and in wars from the Spanish-American War to the World Wars, cementing their legacy in U.S. Army history.
