Unit History
The 761st Tank Battalion, nicknamed the “Black Panthers,” was a segregated African American armored unit that served with distinction in World War II. Activated in 1942, it fought in the European Theater, including the Battle of the Bulge, the push into Germany, and the liberation of concentration camps.
The battalion’s shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) features a black panther leaping on a yellow triangle, symbolizing strength, courage, and ferocity in combat. The 761st earned a reputation for skill, bravery, and breaking racial barriers, making it one of the most celebrated African American units in U.S. military history.
