Unit History

The 50th Armored Division, known as the “Jersey Blues,” was a New Jersey Army National Guard formation active during the Cold War. Established in 1946, the division was built around armor, cavalry, and mechanized infantry forces designed to reinforce U.S. and NATO defense missions if mobilized. Although it never deployed to combat as a full division, its soldiers trained extensively for rapid wartime readiness and supported national emergencies and stateside missions. The “Jersey Blues” lineage reflects deep colonial-era roots in New Jersey military history, symbolizing resilience, preparedness, and pride in the state’s long-standing service tradition.
