Unit History
The 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) played a major role in Europe during the Cold War, stationed primarily in Germany as part of U.S. Army Europe’s forward deterrence force. Known for its “Rock of the Marne” legacy, the division guarded key sectors along the Iron Curtain, maintaining constant readiness against potential Soviet aggression. Soldiers completed tough field training, border patrol rotations, and the traditional “Right of Passage” rites marking their integration into the division’s storied history.
Throughout the Cold War, 3rd ID’s presence helped stabilize NATO’s defensive line, contributing to deterrence, alliance strength, and peace in Europe. Veterans who served in Germany during this period are honored with Cold War Service (COLD SVC) recognition for their commitment during one of the most tense eras of U.S. military history.
