Unit History
The 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) was one of the most battle-tested U.S. Army divisions in the Korean War, fighting from the early days of the conflict in 1950 until the armistice in 1953. The division played a major role in the defense of the Pusan Perimeter, the breakout toward Seoul, and heavy fighting along the rugged central and western fronts.
3rd ID is best known for its heroic stand during the Battle of the Chosin Reservoir, where elements of the division helped secure the withdrawal of the 1st Marine Division under extreme winter combat conditions. The division also fought fiercely along the Jamestown Line and in numerous engagements that defined the later years of the war.
For its actions, the 3rd Infantry Division earned multiple battle honors, and its Soldiers are recognized with Korean War Service (KOREA War SVC) for their courage and sacrifice in one of the toughest conflicts of the Cold War era.
