Unit History

The 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) was a key U.S. Army unit stationed in Germany throughout the Cold War, positioned on the front line of NATO’s defense against the Soviet Union. With major garrisons in places such as Würzburg, Kitzingen, and Schweinfurt, the division maintained constant readiness, conducting field exercises, border patrol missions, and rapid-response drills to deter potential aggression across the Iron Curtain.

Known for its “Rock of the Marne” legacy, 3rd ID carried its proud combat history into its Cold War mission, serving as one of the most dependable and highly trained divisions in U.S. Army Europe. Soldiers who served during this era are honored with Cold War Service (COLD SVC) for their role in preserving stability and helping prevent conflict during decades of global tension.
