Unit History

The 3rd Infantry Division (3rd ID) played a critical role during the Battle of Chosin Reservoir (November–December 1950) in the Korean War. Facing extreme cold, rugged terrain, and overwhelming Chinese forces, the division conducted defensive operations and helped secure withdrawal routes for U.S. and allied units, including the 1st Marine Division.

Soldiers of the 3rd ID demonstrated extraordinary courage, resilience, and tactical skill under some of the harshest conditions of the war. Their actions contributed to saving lives, maintaining combat effectiveness, and ultimately achieving operational objectives. Personnel who served during this engagement are recognized with Korean War Service (KOREA War SVC) for their valor and dedication.
