Unit History
The 24th Infantry Regiment, one of the historic African American units known as the Buffalo Soldiers, was formed in 1869 during the post–Civil War reorganization of the U.S. Army. The regiment served across the American West, participating in frontier campaigns and protecting settlers, mail routes, and railroad crews. In the 20th century, the 24th Infantry saw major action in the Spanish–American War, Philippine–American War, and early Korean War. Despite segregation and limited opportunities, its soldiers built a legacy of discipline, bravery, and resilience. The regiment was inactivated in 1951 as the Army integrated, and later reactivated for lineage purposes, preserving its historic honors.
