Unit History

The 1st Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment (1-502 IN), part of the 101st Airborne Division (Air Assault), deployed to Southwest Asia for Operations Desert Shield and Desert Storm in 1990–1991. The battalion conducted long-range air-assault operations, secured key terrain, and participated in deep-attack missions that disrupted Iraqi command and control. During the ground campaign, 1-502 IN advanced rapidly across the desert, helping cut off retreating Iraqi forces and contributing to the swift coalition victory. Soldiers of the battalion earned campaign participation credit and recognition for their service during the liberation of Kuwait.
