Kagnew Station - Asmara, Eritrea
Kagnew Station was a U.S. military base located in Asmara, Eritrea, which was part of the Ethiopian Empire during its operational period. It was a key U.S. communications and listening station from the 1940s to the early 1970s. Kagnew Station played a vital role in U.S. military and intelligence operations during the Cold War, providing strategic communications and intelligence-gathering capabilities, especially for monitoring Soviet activities. The station was also used for various military purposes, including as a relay station for communications across Africa and the Middle East. It closed in 1977 following political changes and the rise of the Eritrean independence movement.
