UNIT HISTORY
The history of the 2nd Battalion, 502nd Infantry Regiment's Vietnam-era Shoulder Sleeve Insignia (SSI) is rooted in the 101st Airborne Division's "Screaming Eagles" identity and airborne operations. The unit was part of the first major combat forces sent to Vietnam in 1965, fighting until 1972. The SSI design, with its eagle, is based on the division's insignia, with the eagle signifying the division's airborne classification and its downward flight from a cloud representing parachute assaults.
