UNIT HISTORY

The 9th Cavalry Regiment was one of the original all-Black cavalry regiments formed in 1866 and were known as "Buffalo Soldiers". While they played a significant role in the American West, there is no widely documented record of the 9th Cavalry Regiment being stationed at Fort Missoula, Montana. Their history is primarily associated with other posts, such as Fort Riley, Kansas, and campaigns across the Southwest, like the Apache Wars. Fort Missoula was more closely associated with the 25th Infantry Regiment, an all-Black unit, and later with units that were involved in the Spanish-American War and World War I.
