UNIT HISTORY
The 56th Artillery Command, a US Army unit, was stationed at the Bismarck Kaserne in Neu-Ulm, Germany, where it served as the headquarters for the Pershing missile system from approximately the late 1960s until its inactivation in 1991. Its inactivation was due to the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty, which led to the elimination of the Pershing missiles. The command was reactivated in October 2021 at a new location in Mainz-Kastel, Germany, but its history is defined by its role during the Cold War in Germany.
