UNIT HISTORY
The U.S. Army's 56th Artillery Command historically operated the Pershing missile system, which was a key component of NATO's nuclear deterrence force in Europe. The system, named after General John J. Pershing, was first deployed as the Pershing I and upgraded to the Pershing IA. It was later replaced by the longer-range Pershing II missile. The command's history is marked by its service in Germany and, tragically, a deadly Pershing II missile explosion in Heilbronn in 1985 that killed three U.S. soldiers. The Pershing systems were ultimately withdrawn from Europe by 1991 following the Intermediate-Range Nuclear Forces (INF) Treaty between the U.S. and the Soviet Union.
