UNIT HISTORY

The 10th Cavalry Regiment, a famous "Buffalo Soldier" unit composed of Black soldiers, had a long history in the U.S. Army's cavalry branch. While a significant portion of their service was in the Southwest, the regiment was not permanently stationed at Fort Keogh, Montana. The 25th Infantry and 7th Cavalry were stationed at Fort Keogh during the period when Buffalo Soldiers served in the western United States, which is why the two are often conflated in historical contexts.
