UNIT HISTORY
The 10th Cavalry Regiment, one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments, was stationed at Fort Assiniboine, Montana, and was instrumental in maintaining peace on the Montana and Canadian border. As an all-Black unit with white officers, the 10th Cavalry Regiment was formed in 1866 and served in combat during the Indian Wars, Spanish-American War, and Mexican Revolution before its deactivation during World War II. Fort Assiniboine was established in 1879, with the 10th Cavalry among the units garrisoned there, tasked with maintaining order and patrolling the Milk River Valley, which was experiencing conflict between Native American tribes.
