The 77th Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Statue of Liberty Division," was a U.S. Army unit known for its distinguished service in World War I and World War II. Comprised originally of draftees from New York, it became one of the most battle-hardened divisions.
The nickname reflects both its New York roots and its symbol—the Statue of Liberty—which was proudly worn on the unit's shoulder insignia. The division is also remembered for the heroic stand of the "Lost Battalion" in WWI.
