6th United States Army - Presidio SF

The 6th United States Army, known as the "Alamo Force" during World War II, was a major U.S. Army formation headquartered at the Presidio of San Francisco from 1946 until its inactivation in 1995. Established in 1943, the 6th Army played a pivotal role in the Pacific Theater, leading campaigns in New Guinea, the Philippines, and preparing for the planned invasion of Japan. After the war, the 6th Army was responsible for training and administrative oversight of Army forces in the western United States. During the Korean War, it managed the deployment and support of units to the front lines and oversaw medical care for returning casualties at Letterman Army Hospital. The 6th Army was inactivated in 1995 as part of post-Cold War military restructuring, marking the end of over two centuries of military presence at the Presidio.
