56th Artillery Command - Pershing
The 56th Artillery Command was a unit of the U.S. Army responsible for overseeing Pershing missile operations during the Cold War. The Pershing missile was a type of medium-range ballistic missile (MRBM) developed in the 1950s and 1960s, named after General John J. Pershing.
The 56th Artillery Command was primarily tasked with managing the deployment and operation of Pershing missiles in Europe, particularly during the 1970s and 1980s, as part of NATO’s efforts to counter Soviet threats. These missiles played a significant role in the Cold War deterrence strategy before being retired in the early 1990s following arms reduction agreements.
