The 761st Tank Battalion, an all-Black unit, was the first to see combat during World War II. VE Day, or Victory in Europe Day, marked the end of the war in Europe on May 8, 1945, after Germany's surrender on May 7. While VE Day marked the end of the war in Europe, the conflict continued in the Pacific and the Far East, with some troops redeployed to fight there rather than returning home.
