In the United States Armed Forces, the ranks of warrant officer (grade W‑1) and chief warrant officer (grades CW-2 to CW‑5)—NATO: WO1–CWO5—are rated as officers above all non-commissioned officers, candidates, cadets, and midshipmen, but subordinate to the lowest officer grade of O‑1 (NATO: OF‑1). This application differs from the Commonwealth of Nations and other militaries, where warrant officers are the most senior of the other ranks (NATO: OR‑8 and OR‑9), equivalent to the U.S. Armed Forces grades of E‑8 and E‑9.
The 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment, a unit within the U.S. Army's 1st Cavalry Division, played a significant role in the Vietnam War, particularly in the Battle of Ia Drang Valley. This unit was part of the air cavalry, utilized for reconnaissance missions, rapid deployment of troops, and aerial assessment of bomb damage. Their use of helicopters allowed them to engage in combat more effectively, including bringing in larger combat units when needed. The 2nd Battalion, 7th Cavalry Regiment was also involved in other engagements in the war, demonstrating their versatility and capabilities.
