The 48th "Hurricane" Infantry Division was formed on 15 September 1946 of Florida and Georgia National Guardsmen. Just four days after the organization of the 51st "Rattlesnake" Infantry Division, which included some of Florida's Army National Guard units, the balance of the state's Guard units were combined with most of Georgia's Army National Guard to constitute the newly organized 48th "Hurricane" Infantry Division.
