The U.S. Army's 1st Armored Division, also known as "Old Ironsides," was activated on July 15, 1940, at Fort Knox, Kentucky, as the United States prepared for World War II. It became the first U.S. armored division to see combat, fighting in North Africa and Italy during the war. After the war, the division was part of the occupying force in Germany before returning to the U.S. in 1946. Its subsequent history includes Cold War service, participation in Operation Desert Storm during the Persian Gulf War, and extensive deployments in support of the Global War on Terror, including Operation Iraqi Freedom and Operation Enduring Freedom. The division is now based at Fort Bliss, Texas.
