The 24th Infantry Regiment, one of the original "Buffalo Soldier" regiments, was stationed at Camp Furlong, near Columbus, New Mexico, from 1916 to 1922, following the Punitive Expedition into Mexico. This unit played a significant role in the region after Pancho Villa's raid on Columbus and the subsequent U.S. military response.
