A veteran with 1st Bn 5th Inf served in Vietnam as part of either the 5th Infantry Division (Army) or the 1st Marine Division (Marines), which are both distinct units with different service histories and combat zones. Army veterans would have been part of the 5th Infantry Division (Mechanized), often operating near the Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) from 1968-1971. Marine veterans, serving with the 1st Battalion, 5th Marines, deployed from 1966-1971 to various locations, including Chu Lai and the battle for Hue.
