The 1st Infantry Division, known as "The Big Red One," was deployed to Vietnam in July 1965. During the Vietnam War, the division’s tank battalions were left behind, and mechanized infantry units were reorganized as traditional infantry. The 1st Battalion, 28th Infantry, also known as the "Black Lions," was part of this division and operated mainly in the III Corps Tactical Zone with headquarters moving between Bien Hoa, Di An, and Lai Khe among other locations. The division played a critical role in countering enemy movements and supporting combined operations with allied Vietnamese forces
