The "Sunburst" 40th Infantry Division was formed in 1917 from National Guard units in the Western United States and served as a depot division during World War I, providing replacements for other divisions. It saw combat in the Pacific Theater during World War II, fighting on Guadalcanal, New Britain, Luzon, Panay, and Negros. After World War II, it served in the Korean War, and later was called up for domestic disturbances like the 1992 Los Angeles riots. Most recently, the division deployed to the Middle East for operations in the Global War on Terrorism.
