The 34th Infantry Division, known as the "Sandstorm Division" for the dust storms at its New Mexico training camp and later the "Red Bull" Division for its patch, is a historically significant U.S. Army National Guard unit formed from Midwest states in 1917. It was the first U.S. division deployed to Europe in World War II and saw extensive, grueling combat in North Africa and Italy, earning the most front-line combat days of any U.S. division. After being redesignated as the "Viking" Division during the Cold War, it reverted to the "Red Bull" name in 1991 and has continued to serve in conflicts such as Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as homeland defense missions, demonstrating a 100-year lineage of "citizen soldiery".
