The "Roosevelt's SS" nickname for the U.S. Army's 30th Infantry Division, nicknamed the "Old Hickory" Division, originated with their German adversaries due to the division's relentless fighting during World War II. This nickname was a badge of honor, symbolizing the 30th's consistent ability to bring tremendous and terrific pressure on Hitler's elite units. Composed of National Guard units from the Carolinas, Georgia, and Tennessee, the 30th Division fought with distinction, including during the Battle of the Bulge and the push across the Rhine, earning it a reputation as one of the toughest fighting units in the European Theater.
