The "Blue and Gray" 29th Infantry Division was formed in 1917 from troops from the North and South, symbolizing national unity, and is renowned for its pivotal role in the D-Day invasion on Omaha Beach during World War II, where its 116th Regiment was in the first wave of assault troops, suffering heavy losses but pushing inland through France and into Germany to reach the Elbe River by the war's end. The Division has participated in numerous conflicts since its World War I formation, including deployments to Bosnia, Iraq, Afghanistan, and the Sinai Peninsula in the Cold War and beyond.
