The "Iron Division," officially the 28th Infantry Division, is the oldest continuously serving division in the U.S. Army National Guard, tracing its origins to 1879 in Pennsylvania. It earned its nickname during World War I for its "Iron" resolve and gained further notoriety during the Battle of the Bulge in World War II for its tenacious, though costly, stand against German forces. The 28th Infantry Division has served in numerous conflicts, including the Spanish-American War, World War I, World War II, and post-Cold War operations in the Middle East and the Balkans, embodying a legacy of enduring service.
