During World War I, the U.S. Army organized a 20th Division, a Regular Army and National Army formation intended for overseas service, which was demobilized in February 1919 before it could deploy to France. This division, centered at Camp Sevier, South Carolina, contained the 39th and 40th Infantry Brigades (with the 48th, 89th, 50th, and 90th Infantry Regiments), the 58th, 59th, and 60th Machine Gun Battalions, and the 20th Field Artillery Brigade.
