The 17th Infantry Division was not the "Phantom Division," but rather a real U.S. Army unit that was recreated in World War II to serve as a phantom division as part of the Fortitude South II deception operation to mislead Germans about the Normandy invasion site. The actual "Phantom Division" was a more broadly used term for units involved in tactical deception, with the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops, known as the "Ghost Army," being the most prominent example.
