The 13th Infantry Division was activated in the US Army in July 1918 at Camp Lewis, Washington, to prepare for combat in France during World War I, but the war ended before it deployed. Comprised of regular army cadres and draftees, its four infantry regiments were organized into two brigades. Although the division was never sent to France, it was demobilized in March 1919, and its history served as the roots for the later 13th Airborne Division.
