The 135th Airborne Division patch is associated with the "Phantom Division," a notional unit created by the U.S. Army during World War II for psychological warfare and deception operations. It was part of a larger effort, including the "Ghost Army," to convince German forces that Allied airborne capabilities were much larger than they were. Although no real 135th Airborne Division existed, the shoulder sleeve insignia (SSI) was designed and manufactured for use in these deceptive campaigns.
